Fire Suppression Systems: Reducing Loss Through Engineered Control
Fire suppression systems are designed to automatically control or extinguish fires, reducing reliance on human response and limiting damage to people, property, and operations. Early suppression is critical in preventing rapid fire spread and severe business interruption.
In South Africa, fire suppression is governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), the National Building Regulations, local municipal fire bylaws, and relevant SANS standards. These laws place a clear duty on building owners and employers to install and maintain appropriate fire protection systems.
However, compliance alone is not enough. Not all suppression systems are suitable for all risks.
When Suppression Is Essential
Fire suppression becomes critical in environments with:
High fire loads
Flammable or combustible materials
Critical or high-value equipment
Limited evacuation time
In these settings, selecting the wrong system can be as ineffective as having no system at all.
Engineering the Right Solution
CRA assesses fire risks based on fire load, potential fire scenarios, operational needs, and legal and insurance requirements. This ensures that suppression systems provide effective, engineered protection — not just minimum compliance.
The result is reduced loss, improved safety, and greater business resilience when it matters most.
